How it works
A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC. JavaScript and many APIs use milliseconds instead; this tool detects which one you pasted from its length.
Timestamps have no time zone: the same number is the same instant everywhere. The tool shows it in UTC and in your browser's time zone, plus ISO 8601 for APIs.
Questions
- Seconds or milliseconds?
- Ten digits is seconds (until the year 2286); thirteen digits is milliseconds.
- What is the 2038 problem?
- Signed 32-bit timestamps overflow on 19 January 2038. 64-bit systems, and this tool, are not affected.
