SHA-256 hash generator
Hash text with SHA-256, SHA-1, SHA-384 or SHA-512 in your browser, as hex or Base64. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
A hash turns any text into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash, and changing one character changes it completely. Hashes check integrity and identify content; they cannot be reversed.
Hashing here uses the browser's Web Crypto API on the UTF-8 bytes of your text. SHA-1 is broken for security purposes; use SHA-256 or stronger. MD5 and salted, iterated hashing are available through the API.
Questions
- Can I store passwords as SHA-256?
- Not on its own. Passwords need a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2.
- Why does my hash differ from another tool?
- Check for a trailing newline or different text encoding; both change the bytes being hashed.
Do this in your code
The same job is one call to the APIStack API, from any language or as a tool for AI agents over MCP. The free plan includes it.
